Every epoxy resin floor is the result of at least two different elements: the resin itself and a hardener. The correct ratio creates the perfect combination that gives enough time to pour or trowel the liquid into place before curing occurs.

The hardener (also known as a curing agent) is a crucial player in this magical transformation. It’s the catalyst behind the chemical reaction that morphs the malleable liquid into the tough, seamless finish of the perfect epoxy floor.

Real world situations require real world solutions, which is why SHIMICOAT has developed a range of purposely focused curing agents to suit a variety of uses, including:

  • Fast Cure
  • Cold Cure
  • Underwater CURECOAT
  • Abrasion Resistant
  • Fire Resistant
  • High Temperature
  • UVSTAB UV Stable
  • FATRES Fatigue Resistant Structural Adhesive
  • CORCHEM Corrosive Chemical Protective Coating

But epoxy hardeners are only the beginning of the story. While they are essential for every floor project, there are many other popular additives. These play very particular roles and are what allow floors to be tailored to the required individual finish.

These include:

Understanding Epoxy Additives

Let’s break down the additive categories to explain the function of each.

Epoxy diluents

A diluent is added to thin out the liquid mixture when needed. The carefully created formula of SHIMICOAT diluent reduces the viscosity without compromising the integrity of the product. This means that the cured flooring remains the same quality and structure, but the application process is enhanced.

While a diluent isn’t always necessary, you might consider its use when:

  • Enhanced penetration is needed. For example, on a very porous surface.
  • Applying intricate designs and for hard-to-reach areas.
  • When a very thin coating is required.

Epoxy pigments & tints

These are a key customisation component. When we say that SHIMICOAT resin comes in an infinite range of colours, it’s these additives that make it possible. Whether you require a bold focus shade or something more subtle, the chosen colourant and amount added are responsible for the finished product.

Our tints & pigments are designed for ease of use and, most importantly, to ensure consistent saturation. This means that every square centimetre is uniform and of the required shade.

Epoxy flakes

This is another additive for creating a bespoke finish. However, epoxy flakes go above and beyond mere aesthetics: they’re also extremely functional. They add a speckled effect, which is pleasing to the eye, but they also improve slip resistance.

Examples of where they might be used include:

  • Fast Cure
  • Cold Cure
  • Underwater CURECOAT
  • Abrasion Resistant
  • Fire Resistant
  • High Temperature
  • UVSTAB UV Stable
  • FATRES Fatigue Resistant Structural Adhesive
  • CORCHEM Corrosive Chemical Protective Coating

Epoxy glitter

Glitter is an attractive additive that catches the light and adds an element of sparkle. The wow factor means it’s often used in display areas, such as showrooms or retail locations. It can also be a great addition to feature floors in domestic spaces. Combine glitter with your chosen tint & pigment or use it as a standalone decoration for a sheer glistening finish.

Epoxy quartz

This is another dual-purpose additive. It adds the aesthetic appeal of glinting natural quartz as well as increasing the durability of the floor. It also enhances the non-slip properties. Because of this, it’s typically added to high-traffic areas, such as commercial kitchens, warehouses and other industrial locations. It’s often used in outdoor locations, thanks in part to the additional strength and firm foot grip in wet conditions, but also because it beautifully mimics Mother Nature.

With the exception of the hardener, which is always needed, all the above epoxy additives are only added when required. These are the reasons that every epoxy project is wholly customisable. From the colour to the finish, not to mention additional durability options for the toughest of use, SHIMICOAT epoxy floors are as individual as your needs.

And, of course, our epoxy kits are designed to make the application process as simple as possible. Discover more about our flooring systems and answers to FAQs in our comprehensive SHIMI UNI section.
