Epoxy resin floors can last for decades with good maintenance. A little TLC each day or week (depending on its location) is all that’s needed to keep yours looking as beautiful as the moment it was installed.

Of course, an epoxy floor in – say – a mechanic’s workshop will require a little more maintenance than one that surrounds your home swimming pool. But the underlying principles are the same.

All you need do is…

  • Remove debris daily: Grit, dust, dirt and other mess is abrasive. While epoxy is highly resistant to this, a quick sweep each day will mean that you avoid the abrasion that this causes if trod underfoot or vehicles drive over it. If you don’t fancy getting the broom out, simply use a vacuum cleaner to hoover up the debris.
  • Mop regularly: Warm water and a mop are generally all that’s needed to keep the floor in great condition. If there are any particularly stubborn stains, they can usually be easily removed with a deck scrubbing brush – It’s unlikely that you’ll need any cleaning fluids to lift marks away as the properties of epoxy are highly resistant to staining. However, if you do, then spot cleaning can be carried out.
  • Spot clean where necessary: Chemical spills, oils and other harder-to-remove stains can be removed with an appropriate cleaning fluid. Chemicals might require neutralising agents and bodily fluids in hospitals or other healthcare settings will need to be sterilised. You can clean up virtually any substance with whatever product is necessary because epoxy resin is resistant to even the harshest of cleaning fluids. Of course, it goes without saying that you should clean up corrosive spills asap. If you do this, then you won’t have to worry about them causing any damage to the integrity of the epoxy.
  • Avoid carelessness: Sure, epoxy resin is incredibly tough – but this doesn’t mean it’s indestructible. Its properties allow it to withstand incredible weight, heavy vehicular and foot traffic, items being dropped on it and more. But this doesn’t mean it should be abused. In an industrial environment, it’s important to have clear cleaning and maintenance instructions for employees to follow. Examples include clearing up spillages as soon as they occur, clearing grit and debris daily and carrying out an end-of-day cleaning schedule.

Great maintenance equals increased longevity. These simple tasks will extend the lifespan of an epoxy floor – they can last over three decades with a little care. Plus, an epoxy floor will never require time-intensive processes, such as polishing or resurfacing. It can also be used in both interior and exterior locations, meaning you can easily extend an installation to include outside areas for great aesthetics.
